Vince, who is currently awaiting Level 2 certification and works at Wildernesse Golf Club as an assistant greenkeeper, competed in the inaugural under-20 category and was up against five finalists, selected from hundreds of entrants around the country. All entrants were tested on their knowledge, not only of greenkeeping tasks, skills and health and safety, but also their understanding of the job role, personal development, industry awareness, the Toro company, BIGGA and their career aspirations.
The winners ceremony was held at Aldwark Manor Golf & Spa Hotel, near York, and Vince won a trip to attend the Continue To Learn programme at BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition – a three-night package including education, hotel, travel and spending money, plus a gift voucher for Toro training.
Vince said: “I’m over the moon to be selected for an award in such a prestigious competition and the assessors at Hadlow have been really supportive.”
When quizzed about his aspirations, he said: “As I’m half-Italian, I’d love to work at one of the courses in the Milan area. I’m hopeful, since British greenkeepers are highly sought after in continental Europe. I’d also love to work in Australia or the US, where they have a very respectful culture around golf, but you need an entirely different knowledge-base, given the diverse climate, pests and diseases. Ultimately, my aim is to work on a high-profile championship course that features on TV!”
